"Intermission"

Troubling eye problem.

Can’t write.

Be back when I can.

In the meantime, thanks for the company.

I’ve never had more fun writing.

So long.

And as The Cisco Kid used to say,

“See you soon, Ha!”

  2. Oddly, Brett and Bart were on Maverick together, this a.m.

    Feel and be better!

  5. Hope your feeling better soon, Earl. I enjoy your writing very much. If you end up having to wear an eye patch for awhile, it may prevent you from seeing Jack Kelly in the few Maverick episodes where he appeared with James Garner. That reminds me of a very old joke that someone else wrote but you might enjoy. "Moshe Dayan watches Huntley." Feel better, Earl.

  6. I know you posted this yesterday but it didn't sink in until this morning when I opened your blog, as usual, and saw no new post. I knew it wouldn't be here but it didn't register until it wasn't there. All I can think is that you must be feeling terrible to not be writing. I hope you feel better soon.

  7. Dear Earlo,

I hope you can see you way clear to posting again real soon, Thanks for all the smiles, and I wish you and yours many happy trails to discover.

  8. I just get nervous when I go to your blog and nothing new has been posted. Makes me wonder if you've gone to that great big Sitcom in the Sky.

  9. I have not commented on your blog for a couple of years now, more or less since my life turned upside down after the newspaper I wrote for sold to new owners who wanted a nice cushy bottom line. Note: I said "cushy" not tushy. They probably have enough padding on their personal bottom line (their tushy) to sit comfortably on a thorny cactus plant.
Anyone they intended to make a killing at the paper by significantly increasing revenue -- a ridiculous notion at a daily community newspaper. Their strategy? Slash the staff, or more polite terms, the dreaded word "downsize." Three and a half weeks after they took possession of the paper, on July 25, 2017, about 20 staff positions were eliminated and I was among that group. I had been a staff reporter there for more than 13 years. Some of the other employees who lost their jobs worked there for 30 years, so I was in good company.
The following month more people were released into the unemployment lines, and that scenario repeated in the months to follow, kind of like watching an instant replay of a home run by Ernie Banks at Wrigley Field. I had to let my Chicago roots shine through, though I've lived in Southern California for the past 34 years.
Anyway, I'm semi-recovered from the shock of my job loss. And, I hope you recover quickly from your eye problem. Your writing has kept me entertained and even made me laugh at times when my spirits were down. So thank you. I hope the Intermission doesn't last too long.

  11. I just saw this video the other day but it was made over two years ago. But when I saw it, it made me realize how my love for Earl's blog and my love for Randy Newman's music have a similar basis. They both can make you laugh and cry within minutes of each other. And Earl likes Randy Newman, too.

This video is from the time Mr. Newman performed on the National Public Radio "Tiny Desk Concerts" series:

  12. If any of Earl’s family members monitor this site, could we get an update on Earl’s condition? How is he doing?

    ReplyDelete
  13. It could be something completely different but not the first time Earl’s sight has been an issue.

  23. I didn't know Earl, I'm just a fan of his writing here and elsewhere, but he felt like a friend. He was a terrific stylist with a unique voice. He told the truth, which is important in nonfiction but even more critical in fiction. If someone from his family reads this note, I just want them to know that he made a difference in my life and I will miss him.

  26. I'm so sorry. I never met Earl and only knew him through this blog but he's had a big influence on me. I've read this blog every day and feel like I knew him and his family a little from his words here. I will miss him and the stories about his family, friends and his past. His blog posts imagined conversations were truly wonderful. My condolences to Dr. M, theirs daughters and his grandchildren.

  27. Like so many here, I felt I knew Earl personally because of his blog, which was for me, like many others, a daily stop. To Dr M, Anna, Golde, Milo, and Jack, whom he mentioned so often, my condolences. We'll miss him - and you.

  29. As always, Earl's blog was my first stop this morning, as I hoped his eye trouble might have passed and there would be a new post telling us, in his inimitable style, about it. Seeing no new post, I moved on. An hour later, I made my daily stop at Ken Levine's blog and was stunned by the news. (I was also surprised to learn how close Ken and Earl had been because neither mentioned the other excessively on his blog.)

So long, Earl. We miss you already.

  31. I was so sorry to hear of Earl's passing, my sympathy to you, his family. I too read his blog every day and will truly miss him. I will never be able to look at a Nativity scene at a Church and not think of him. Probably his best column ever. Thanks Earl

  32. I had one of the most fun lunches of my life with Earl about 10 years ago and he was hilarious. A great conversationalist, interested in just about everything and he offered me very good advice about retirement, as it was on my radar screen. I wish I had gotten the chance to work with Earl. He clearly loved comedy and westerns and character, always going for the best joke possible and never settling for less. I love his blog and have been reading it for about as long as he has been writing it. I know how much I will miss Earl and so I cannot even imagine how much his family and his friends whose life he was a regular part of are going to miss him, but I'm guessing that they are all just grateful to have had him in their lives for as long as they did. ❤️

  33. Earl wrote two of my favorite Cheers episodes. One was the first season, Sam's Women. The other was when the Sam & Diane romance was underway, How Do I Love Thee?

Years ago, Earl let his readers know he had a heart problem. As I recall, he invited readers to weigh in on the procedure: a human heart surgeon or a robot. I voted for the robot, and he later wrote that the procedure (valve replacement, maybe) had been performed with a robot. It had gone well, he let us know.

Back in 2017, I used an Audible credit to buy an Eddie Izzard memoir because Earl had praised Eddie in his blog essay, "Upgrade." It's good.

    Earl will truly be missed.

  34. To Mr. Pomerantz' family and friends,

In difficult times like this, we try to remember the good times and laughter. What an incredible legacy of that remains for us.

Thank you for the laughs and the entertainment.

Comfort for those who mourn this enormous loss.

  35. Just heard about Earl's passing on Ken Levine's blog. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. He wrote for some of my favorite shows. And it sounds like he was also a good guy.

  41. I had the pleasure of working with Earl on a little show called Kristin many years back. We couldn't have been more different, but that didn't matter to Earl. He treated me as an equal. I was a young Latina from the ghetto with zero connections in the entertainment world, and he was, well, Earl Pomerantz. So many stories. So many laughs. And not just from him. He wanted to know about me, too. It was not one-sided. He was interested in my New Mexico connection, and just about had me convinced that I was Jewish after showing me an article about Jewish New Mexicans hiding out in their basements lighting candles. It gave him such joy to think that the two of us, so different, could share a similar ancestry. I've missed him over the years and miss him even more now that I know I will never have the pleasure of his kindness and entertaining stories.

My best to his family who I know he loved so much.

  42. I was thinking that, after some time, maybe Earl's family will decide to leave his blog up with all of his stories for other younger writers to enjoy as they learn about Earl from older writers like some of us. I hope it stays up because I'm sure I have missed some stories over the years and would love to continue to be able to look back and find something that Earl wrote that I had not read yet. Also, there are a lot non-writer fans of comedy who will also learn of Earl as the years go on and it would be great if they could also discovers all of blog stories. Most won't ever be able to read a script that Earl wrote for "Best of The West" but they can read some of the stories Earl wrote about making it and his love for westerns as a kid. Also a lot of great vacation stories and stories about his interactions with famous people and regular everyday people. So many stories and so unique and specific to Earl Pomerantz.

Anyway, it's just a thought for the family to consider. It's just that the idea of Earl's stories living on for new generations of readers would be a really nice thing.

  43. This is so sad. I only had limited interactions with Earl, but he left an impression. A nice one. Trawling through his archives was tremendous fun (his "Story of a Writer" series is brilliant). I didn't read his blog as regularly as it deserved (it was always surprising -- far better written than any blog has any right to be), but it's funny how certain people leave more of a memory that you'd think they would. Earl was one of those for me.

Wherever you are, Earl, thanks for sharing all your thoughts and memories.

I hope this blog remains live for many, many years to come. And my condolences to his close friends and family.

  44. To whom it may concern:
I miss Earl Pomerantz and I miss his writing in his blog - especially around this time of year. He had wonderful stories about Chanukah but he even had Christmas stories and I will miss the ones about helping the princess get her Harrods packages wrapped and his original story about the Wise Men and their three gifts (which is why we think there were only three Wise Men). I will go back and read them again but it won't be the same.

So, Earl, if you can see this, I know Chanukah starts tonight here on Earth. When does it start up there? Or is it always going? I wish you a Happy Chanukah and, if your family happens to see this, I wish them, "Hanukkah Sameach!"

What's it like celebrating Chanukah in Heaven? My understanding of Jewish theology is really limited so please excuse me if that was a bad or embarrassing question. I would imagine all the candles of the Menorah would never go out there let alone burn for eight days.

And Earl, if you're listening, what do you think about this strange election that we still seem to be going through? I went back to read your posts after the previous election so I know, if you'd been here, you would have voted for the true winner. But the other guy, who is supposed to be such a patriot, believes that he couldn't get a fair election and keeps trying to undermine the process. If you can put in a good word with I AM, could you ask him to prod the little guy to just admit he lost? That would be great. I'm not sure if they are talking, though.

That's all I have to say. I hope you are telling lots of stories to your friends and that you still get to see your private Mariachi Band from time to time.

    Your friend,
    Jim Dodd

  45. After being in relationship with Wilson for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that don’t believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I meant a spell caster called Dr Zuma zuk and I email him, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. 48. Hi My name is Rebecca.i just want to share my experience with the world on how i got my love back and saved my marriage… I was married for 7 years with 4 kids and we lived happily until things started getting ugly and we had a fights and arguments almost every time… it got worse at a point that he filed for divorce… I tried my best to make him change his mind & stay with me cause i loved him with all my heart and didn’t want to loose him but everything just didn’t work out… he moved out of the house and still went ahead to file for divorce… I pleaded and tried everything but still nothing worked. The breakthrough came when someone introduced me to this wonderful, great spell caster Dr Zuma, who eventually helped me out… I have never been a fan of things like this but just decided to try reluctantly cause I was desperate and left with no choice… He did special prayers and cast a love spell on him. Within 24hours he called me and was sorry for all the emotional trauma he had cost me, moved back to the house and we continue to live happily, the kids are happy too and we are expecting our fourth child… I have introduced him to a lot of couples with problems across the world and they have had good news… Just thought I should share my experience cause I strongly believe someone out there needs it… You can contact him on spiritualherbalisthealing@gmail.com whatsapp +15068001647

  51. To Earl's wife or daughter... could you disable comments on Earl's wonderful blog so these terrible scam artists will not be able to use his blog for their advertising of garbage. Please keep Earl's blog up for the enjoyment of Earl's fans and friends who often check in to read and re-read all of his posts. Just disable comments so that these scam mongers can't take away from all the great writing Earl did. Or if one of his friends who knows the family sees this, please ask the to do this. I think Earl would be horrified to see what these commenters are doing to his blog.
    Thank you
