I thought that ya kinda had to have been there, for this movie to really hit home. But, for it to be that successful, it had to get more audience than southern liberals from that era would comprise.

I have to say, this movie resonated with me greatly.

I was born in Louisiana in 1953. We certainly didn't have that kind of "help". The 1950s Louisiana bayou was definitely NOT Jackson MS of the same period. And yet...

There was a very freaky familiarity to this movie. The accents did not at all sound fake to me, and I was amazed to find out afterward how long it was. It never once felt like it dragged to me.

I thought it was a very good movie. But, more importantly, I think people need to be reminded of this era right now.

Racism still runs rampant, it's just better hidden these days. We can't have people re-writing history the way some have tried with the holocaust, pretending that these heinous times never existed.

It's important to remember, or to find out, just how bad things were in order never to chance their return. Even a not-that-good movie can serve this purpose if it's a big enough hit. This one, I thought, was entertaining enough to make an important message palatable.

Of course, I'm a white southern liberal of a certain age. I would love to know what southern blacks of my generation thought about it. In any case, I'm glad it was successful.Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07395686312754791503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7823625636675642409.post-60766489583851378302011-09-15T01:29:04.953-07:002011-09-15T01:29:04.953-07:00Nice use of gamboling eh.Nice use of gamboling eh.Franknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7823625636675642409.post-70870561868789612872011-09-14T10:53:54.314-07:002011-09-14T10:53:54.314-07:00Dear Mr. Pomerantz; so far your trip is without in...Dear Mr. Pomerantz; so far your trip is without incident, the so-so movie doesn't count. Although a story maybe boring without trouble a vacation/retreat is not. I hope it doesn't get inclementy on you.

-zZarayahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00336440600394588306noreply@blogger.com
